SOCIAL SKILLS are a very important part of every child’s education. Problem Solving is a social skill that is essential to children’s success in school, at home, in relationships and at work.
In other words, being good at problem solving will serve children socially, academically and later in life… professionally.
Sooooo Important, Right?!
I have the pleasure of supporting teachers from kindergarten to 5th grade. I support them in teaching their students social skills for successful relationships. I also teach directly, small and whole class social skills instruction. I have been doing this for over 20 years and one of the most common requests I get for help in the classroom is…you guessed it, Problem Solving stragegies!
To help students and teachers with this important skill, I created a set of activities to teach students how to solve problems AND how to maintain appropriate behavior while experiencing problems (another big request I get).
These differentiated PROBLEM SOLVING activities will help children who struggle to understand how big or how small a given problem may be and how to match their EMOTIONAL REACTION to the SIZE OF THE PROBLEM.
These activities explicitly teach children to think about which behaviors may be helpful and which behaviors may be hurtfull while they are having a problem.
Understanding this will help children make better decisions about their behavior when they are having a problem and this, in turn, will help them to solve their problems more successfully.
I created these materials to help my students who have a difficult time handling problems and understanding how to make helpful choices. My students frequently feel that small problems are bigger than they really are and engage in unhelpful behaviors out of frustration.
Included in this Problem Solving set are 4 different activities, each differentiated to meet the needs of leaners of the approximate grade/developmental level of kindergarten – 2nd grade and 3rd grade – 5th grade.
These activities work really well with students who struggle with Problem Solving but are also fabulous for supporting social learning of your entire class!
